MIDLAND MUSIC CONCERT SERIES
Saturday, November 17, 2018
Joey Chang Improv Trio Piano, voice and dance
As a classically-trained pianist, Joey Chang involves himself in summoning the history of classical language and applying that training to free form, improvised artistic expression. For this evening, Joey Chang will share the stage with formidably trained artistic collaborators to perform interactive improvisations, the topics and themes of which will be taken from the audience in a true collaboration of all. Through these, they will explore what it sounds like, looks like, and feels like, when a group of people get together and draws upon the totality of their trained experiences in service of a momentary presence in time – to communicate something never communicated before. www.joeychangpianist.com.

Bronxville Overview
Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.
While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.
Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.
The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.

The ever Popular March Singer Song writer Kelly Flint was the co-founder and lead singer for the indy-cult band, Dave’s True Story from 1992 to 2007. They charted multiple times on college radio and performed 150 nights per year for 12 years, selling over 100,000 records. In 2007 Kelly released her solo album, Drive All Night. Her song, “Blood and Bone” got into the Song Writer’s Hall of Fame in the independent artist category, she was John Platt’s DJ’s choice for WFUV and for one day was on the Americana College Radio chart at number 19 smack between Sheryl Crow and Rosanne Cash. Kelly works in advertising and in film and is currently writing songs for her upcoming album. Kelly will be accompanied by her former husband, Jeff Eyrich on upright bass.
In addition Ina May Wool began singing and playing guitar with a country and blues band out of her home state of Massachusetts. The Ina May Wool Band played everywhere from clubs and folk festivals to concerts opening for Tom Rush, Maria Muldaur, Taj Mahal, Orleans, and many more. She now sings solo, has added mandolin to the mix, and writes everything from stomping rave-ups to reflective, poetic, and often wryly humorous songs. She is currently putting together a new recording that does justice to her particular amalgamation of Americana and American popular song. Now based in New York City, Ina May has released two award-winning solo CD’s – Moon Over 97th Street in 1999 and Crack It Open in 2004. Her duo recording, WOOL&GRANT, was recently nominated for Best New Folk album by the Just Plain Folks Organization. And yes, that is her real name.

Artish Menash Idra
Menash Idra’s paintings capture a rich historical tradition. Born in Poland, he started painting at age 14, just after World War II. During his adolescence and young adulthood, he lived in Israel, where his works were exhibited in a prominent Tel Aviv gallery. He was also shown in several exhibition for emerging Israeli artists, where one reviewer noted his strength in the “L’ecole de Paris” (School of Paris) style of painting. Arriving in New York City in 1970, Menash began painting Manhattan buildings, skylines, and street scenes, all of which have become a fixture of his varied work. With deep nostalgia for his Israeli roots, he captured Israeli landscapes and picturesque cities such as Jaffa and Tel Aviv. His love of Europe and the beauty of Paris also found its way into his work. Menash’s artistic style is unique, blending traditional expressionism with a contemporary intensity. His vivid colors and brushstrokes beckon the viewer to reconsider their everyday experience. In his paintings, objects often spring into existence and disappear, bringing up themes of birth, creation, and spirituality. Above all, Menash Idra is able to combine nostalgia and appreciation for the past with a hint and promise of better things for the future. He paints primarily in oil on canvas.
